Enrolment Requirements:

This is a limited enrolment program (Type 2L) that can only accommodate a certain number of students. Eligibility is based on the following criteria:
A. Completion of at least 4.0 FCEs including CSC148H1 (with a minimum grade of 70%) and CSC165H1/​CSC240H1 (with a minimum grade of 70%), AND
B. An average of the grades in CSC148H1/​CSC207H1 and CSC165H1/​CSC236H1/​CSC240H1 that meets the department's annual cutoff. When more than one course has been completed from a list of alternatives, the higher grades will be used. Also, CSC240H1 grades will be adjusted to account for the course's greater difficulty. Finally, note that the cutoff changes from year to year, depending on the current capacity of the program and the pool of applicants. Note that students admitted to the program after second or third year will be required to pay retroactive program fees.

Computer Science

This course in Computer Science aims to produce graduates thoroughly conversant with the principles of modern computing science, who are able to apply those principles in the design and construction of reliable systems. The course at Oxford concentrates on bridging theory and practice, including a wide variety of hardware and software technologies and their applications. The course is designed to equip students with the fundamental understanding and practical skills needed by the potential leaders of a demanding profession.
However, this by no means limits our graduates in their choice of career: like other courses at Oxford, it is a training in logical thought and expression, and can lead to employment in many different fields. A sound understanding of mathematical ideas is needed throughout the degree, both for potential applications such as scientific computation, and for reasoning rigorously about the specification and behaviour of programs.
Practical skills must also be developed, and the majority of subjects within the course are linked with practical work which contributes marks towards the final examination. The laboratory has a large network of up-to-date workstations for practical work, and the network is accessible from colleges and many student rooms, and from the global internet.
This can be taken either as a three-year (BA) or a four-year (Master) degree with exams at the end of each year.

Bachelor of Computing (Honours) in Computer Science

Overview

The Bachelor of Computing (Honours) in Computer Science or BComp (CS) programme aims to nurture students for a rewarding computing career in various industry sectors. Suitable for those who love hands-on work and keen to apply computing technologies to solve real-world problems, the programme will equip students with the critical knowledge and capacity to take on the world with confidence.
At the time of graduation, students are expected to demonstrate:

• Strong knowledge of computer science foundations and fundamentals, including (a) familiarity with common computer science themes and principles, (b) high-level understanding of systems as a whole, (c) understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of computer science and their influences in practice.
• In-depth knowledge in one or more computer science specialisations.
• Individual competence in applying sound principles and rigorous thinking to (a) analyse an application problem, (b) understand user’s requirement, (c) formulate the problem in terms of computation requirements, (c) conceive novel solution ideas, (e) design appropriate solutions that meet the requirements, (f) implement the solution, (g) evaluate the effectiveness of the solution.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work with, and contribute to, a team to bring a range of technologies together to develop computer systems and solutions.
• Ability to engage in continuous professional development.
• Understanding of the responsibilities of an IT professional and the ethical, social, and legal issues related to computing.
